Digital Object Identifier

The DOI (Digital Object Identifier), a unique and persistent identifier, allows you to reference, cite and provide a stable link to an online file. It is an alternative to URIs (Uniform Resource Identifier, a generic term grouping URLs, Uniform Resource Locators, and URNs, Uniform Resource Names).

The purpose of DOIs is to facilitate the long-term management of any online digital object using metadata. This metadata can change over time, but the identifier pointing to the resource remains invariant.

The attribution of a DOI is managed by crossref which provides tools for the attribution, management and dissemination of DOIs.
