Cited-by

Cited-by supports members who display citations, enabling the community to discover connections between research outputs.

Scholars use citations to critique and build on existing research, acknowledging the contributions of others. Members can include references in their metadata deposits which Crossref uses to create links between works that cite each other. The number of citations each work receives is visible to anyone through our public APIs. Through our Cited-by service, members who deposit reference metadata can retrieve everything they need to display citations on their website.

Members who use this service are helping readers to:

  1. easily navigate to related research,
  2. see how the work has been received by the wider community,
  3. explore how ideas evolve over time by highlighting connections between works.
  4. The Cited by feature in Crossref is a valuable tool for tracking how often a particular scholarly work (such as a journal article, book, or conference paper) has been cited by other publications. This feature is part of Crossref’s broader mission to enhance the discoverability and connectivity of academic research.

What is Crossref’s “Cited by” Feature?
Crossref’s “Cited by” feature allows users to:
    1. **Track Citations**:
    – See how many times a specific publication has been cited by other works in Crossref’s database.
    2. Discover Related Research :
    – Explore the citing articles to find related research and build on existing knowledge.
    3.  Measure Impact :
    – Assess the influence and reach of a publication within the academic community.

    How Does It Work?
Crossref collects citation data from its members (publishers, journals, and other organizations) who deposit reference lists with Crossref when they publish new works. These references are then linked to the cited works, enabling the “Cited by” feature.

    Reference Linking :
    – When a publisher deposits a new work with Crossref, they include metadata about the references cited in that work.
    2.  Crossref Database :
    – Crossref uses this metadata to create links between the citing work and the cited work.
    3. “Cited by” Count :
    – Users can see how many times a work has been cited by other publications in Crossref’s database.

How to Access “Cited by” Information
    1.  Crossref Metadata Search :
    – Use the [Crossref Metadata Search](https://search.crossref.org/) to look up a specific publication.
    – If the publication has been cited, the “Cited by” count and links to the citing works will be displayed.

    2.  DOI Resolution :
    – Enter the DOI (Digital Object Identifier) of a publication into Crossref’s DOI resolver (https://doi.org/).
    – If the publication has been cited, the “Cited by” information will be shown.

    3. API Access :
    – Developers and researchers can access “Cited by” data programmatically using the [Crossref API](https://www.crossref.org/apis/).

Benefits of the “Cited by” Feature
    – Research Impact :
    – Helps authors and researchers measure the impact of their work by tracking citations.
    –  Discoverability :
    – Enables users to find related research and build on existing knowledge.
    –  Transparency :
    – Provides a clear and open way to track citations across different publishers and disciplines.
    –  Networking :
    – Helps researchers identify peers and collaborators who are citing their work.
